Repowering have installed a large battery on Elmore House, bringing us one step closer to supplying London homes with community owned solar power.
Brixton Energy Solar 1 is supporting the CommUNITY project in which Repowering London is a partner alongside EDF Energy and UCL Energy Institute. CommUNITY is a ‘local energy market’ innovation trial based at Elmore House on Loughborough Estate where Brixton Energy Solar 1 has assets involved in the project. Find out more details on the project here.
The local energy market makes use of a peer-to-peer platform provided by EDF Energy enabled by blockchain technology where residents of Elmore House who have joined the scheme can buy, sell and share the solar energy produced right above their heads. This trial looks at overcoming the current challenges of households not able to easily access low carbon technologies e.g. those in multi-occupied blocks.
The current phase of the trial has been running since earlier this year in February and is expected to continue until April 2021.
CommUNITY continues into a second phase called the Urban Energy Club project. This will bring in elements of energy storage and network flexibility and so Stortera and UK Power Networks have also come on board as partners. This phase of the project is just starting and will continue through to the end of the overall project. Find out more details on the project here.
In advance of this phase starting the battery was installed on the roof of Elmore House last month, early November. Following the end of the trial the 10kW/22.5kWh battery will remain a community asset.
